Giant Pong:

March Madness Games

You asked for it so here it is, the Giant Pong Event. Departments can bring everyone to compete this year.

March Madness Games

Number of participants Unlimited

Description: Two teams of any size compete against each other on the Giant Pong Court.

Rules:

Cans are arranged in pyramid fashion. Players line up in a single file line with the front of the line at a designated shooting line/area. The first two players in line hold balls. On the signal, the player in the front of the line attempts to toss/bounce a ball into a can, without knocking over the can.

As a player lands their ball in a can they remove their can from the pyramid and retrieve the ball to the next player in line, before returning to the end of their team’s line.

As a player misses a shot, they may retrieve the ball and return it to the teammate standing in the front of the team’s line. If a can is knocked over it will be replaced by the shooting player and the ball returned to the team’s shooting line.

First team to eliminate all the cans wins the round. Best of three rounds wins the event and moves on to qualify for the Medal Rounds played at the National Benefits Day Extravaganza on Thursday, April 3rd.

Description: Two players play best of 3 rounds of 3-6-3 cycle Cups. The player finishing the cycle first wins the round.

Here are two excellent video teachings:

Episode 1: Introduction: Learn how to stack (3:24 minutes)
Episode 3: 3-6-3 Stack (4:59 minutes)

Rules:

  1. Players start with hands on the table waiting for the start signal.
  2. Players must stack in a certain direction – player’s choice (right to left or left to right). Players must up-stack and down-stack in the same direction.
  3. Players can only up-stack one stack at time.
  4. During up-stacking you can only have your hands on one stack at a time. Remove both hands from a stack before beginning building the next stack.
  5. Players cannot up-stack and down-stack at the same time. Remove both hands from last up-stack before starting down-stacking.
  6. You must up-stack and down-stack in the same direction. This means the first stack you make is the first stack you down-stack.
  7. Down-stacking officially starts when all the stacks are up and the player has touched cups to start down-stacking.
  8. Players must down-stack with both hands on the same stack before moving from stack to stack.
  9. Players may have hands on two stacks when down-stacking. (May not when up-stacking.)
  10. Fumbles during up-stacking must be fixed before moving on in a sequence.
  11. Fumbles happening during up-stacking but after moving on to a subsequent stack will cause players to have to take down all stack in order to go back and fix the fumbled stack before proceeding in the cycle.
  12. Fumbles happening after all stacks are erect but before players put both hands on a stack to start down-stacking must be fixed following rule# 10 above.

Here is a very good video about the rules. (3:00 minutes)

Ultimate Frisbee

Helpful Video

Set up:

  • Teams will line up on the sideline of field outlined at Friendship Park.
  • Each team will field 5 players in-play (number of players may be adjusted)
  • Rock Paper Scissors decides who starts on offense and defense
  • Play starts with “the pull” which is like a “kick-off in American Football” when teams line up with their back to the end zone they are defending and one team with the Frisbee throws it to the other team.
March Madness Games

 Play:

  • A player on the receiving team catches the Frisbee or picks up the Frisbee.
  • The player with the Frisbee may not take any steps, but they can pivot as a player does in basketball.
  • The player with the Frisbee must pass within 10-seconds and the defender or “marker” typically counts down the time out loud.
  • Players on offense pass to one another advancing towards the opposing team’s end zone.
  • When a player catches a pass they must come to a stop as soon as possible and pass to another player on their team within 10-seconds.
  • If the offense team can successfully advance the Frisbee by passing to one another into the end zone that team scores a point.
  • After a score, teams line up again and start over.
  • If the offensive team drops a pass that is a “turnover” and the other team can pick up the Frisbee and immediately advance by passing down the field.
  • If the offensive team throws the Frisbee out of bounds that is a turnover. The other team takes over immediately at the spot where the Frisbee went out of bounds.
  • If the defensive team intercepts or knocks down a pass that is a turnover and they take over the Frisbee.
  • If the offensive player holds the Frisbee longer than 10-seconds that is a turnover. The offensive player drops the Frisbee and begins playing defense. The defensive play picks up the Frisbee and becomes offense. The new defensive play starts counting down 10-seconds.
  • A foul will cause a turnover. If players contact the player that initiated the contact committed a foul and the other player begins on offense.
  • Players may substitute whenever play has stopped. Substitute often to “stay fresh.”
  • Play continues until a team scores 5 points or 10-minutes has passed.
  • Ultimate Frisbee is a Non-contact sport.

Number of participants: Teams of more than 10 are strongly recommended and larger teams are even better. Minute to Win It Challenge teams can have as many players as possible. Most challenges benefit from larger groups, some challenges will have a certain number of volunteers and other challenges will require a certain task to be completed a number of times which should involve all players by the time the course is completed.

Description: Two teams with identical courses will race each other through “stations” where they must solve a short challenge. First team to complete all the challenges in the course moves on towards the Gold Medal. Final 4 teams compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze on National Benefits Day.

Rules:

Department’s Teams line up on the same start line and upon signal run to the first challenge station where they will receive instructions and complete the challenge. The Minute to Win It staff will signal when the challenge has been completed successfully.

Teams move to subsequent stations until the course is completed.

March Madness Games

First team to complete the course wins and moves on to qualify to the medal rounds held at the National Benefits Day Extravaganza held on April 3rd at Friendship Park.
