Frequently Asked Questions

When you receive service from the Salt River Police Department that you feel is worthy of praise, we would like to hear about it. The best way to commend a Salt River Police Department employee is to either telephone us at 480-850-8200 or write a brief letter (or e-mail message) describing the incident and the actions you felt were noteworthy. Please include the employee’s name (if known), date, time and location of the event. Commendations are forwarded through the Office of the Chief to the employee with a copy placed in his or her personnel file. Although our employees do not expect to be thanked for everything they do, recognition of exceptional service is always appreciated. Your input helps us to know if we are doing a good job and fulfilling our mission statement of service, respect, pride and dedication.

• Police reports over 25 pages are assessed $0.25 per page
• Checks accepted by mail and in person. NOTE: Cash and Credit Card accepted for in person transactions ONLY. Change is not available, please bring exact amount for your request.
• NO charge for SRPMIC members (must provide SRID)
• Please print clearly. The following information is required before a search for records can be conducted.

Disqualifications

The Salt River Police Department and / or AZPOST will automatically disqualify any individual who has at any time:

• Been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces
• Been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona
• Been previously denied law enforcement certified status or has their current law enforcement certified status revoked or under suspension
• Illegally used marijuana for any purpose within the past three years
• Illegally used marijuana, dangerous drugs or narcotics other than for experimentation. The use of an illegal drug is presumed NOT to be for experimentation if:
  • The use of marijuana exceeds a total of 20 times or exceeds 5 times since the age of 21
  • The use of dangerous drugs or narcotics, other than marijuana, exceeds a total of 5 times or exceeds one time since the age of 21
• Illegally used marijuana while employed or appointed as a Peace Officer
• Illegally used dangerous drugs or narcotics while employed or appointed as a Peace Officer
• Illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported for sale any dangerous drugs or narcotics other than marijuana
• Illegally used dangerous drugs or narcotics, other than marijuana, for any purpose within the past seven years. Examples include: cocaine, crack, methamphetamine (crystal meth or speed of any kind), anabolic steroids, except prescriptions only or FDA approved over the counter preparations
• Had a pattern of abusing prescription medications
• Been convicted or adjudged to have violated traffic regulations governing the movement of vehicles with such a frequency so as to indicate disrespect for traffic laws and a disregard for the safety of other persons on the highway within the past three years
• Had your Arizona Driver’s License suspended as a result of excessive traffic violations or any other act that would automatically suspend your license, or received a suspected license from any other state as a result of similar circumstances
• Been previously employed as a law enforcement agent and since committed or violated a federal, state, or city law pertaining to criminal activity
• Been convicted of any crime under a domestic violence statute
• Lied during any stage of the hiring process
• Falsified the background questionnaire or application

The Salt River Police Department also has discretionary disqualifiers that may be considered during the selection process involving:

• Alcohol use/misuse
• Unlawful sexual conduct
• Excessive traffic violations
• Commission of a felony
• Discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces other than Honorable
• Pattern of failing to meet financial obligations
• Any conduct or pattern that would tend to disrupt, diminish or otherwise jeopardize public trust in the law enforcement profession
• Inability to perform the essential functions of the position

Police Officer Testing

• Physical and Written test
• Physical Test Standards (regardless of age and gender)
  • 1.5 mile run under 15 minutes and 18 seconds
  • 30 sit ups in 1 minute
  • 24 push-ups (no time limit)
  • 20.2 seconds Agility run
  • 300 meter run under 65 seconds
• Written exam will proceed after successful completion of physical exam

VIP

Volunteer in Police Services (VIPS) is a program that provides support and resources for our law enforcement. It develops or enhances volunteer programs in the community for citizens who wish to volunteer their time and skill within law enforcement agencies.

Benefits

Requirements

You must be 18 or older with no criminal history. You must also have the VIPS application filled out, history waiver, and a confidential agreement. All applications will be available at the Salt River Police Administration Building. Location: 10137 East Osborn Road Scottsdale, Arizona 85256.

Q: Where can I pick up a firearm permit?
A: Firearm permits can be picked up and returned to Salt River Police Administration at 10137 East Osborn Road Scottsdale, AZ 85256, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Q: Do I need a firearm permit if I am driving though the community?
A: Anyone who possesses a firearm on or going though Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community must have a firearm permit.

Q: If I do not have a firearm permit will my firearm be seized?
A: Firearms will not normally be seized unless the person is a prohibited possessor or the Officer conducting the stop reasonably believes the person that poses a danger to himself/herself or others, thus the firearm should be seized for public safety.

Any person who witnesses or has direct knowledge of police employee misconduct may make a complaint with the Salt River Police Department. The Salt River Police Department will investigate any employee actions that are contrary to Police Department policy or a violation of tribal, state or federal law or discourteous treatment. Generally, complaints are filed through the supervisor of the involved employee. If you do not know the employee’s supervisor, you may file the complaint with the Salt River Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau. A complaint may be filed in person, by telephone or mail. Be prepared to furnish essential information such as the employee’s name, locations, report numbers, dates and times.
