Testing Process

Our testing process for Firefighter Recruit consists of;

  • Online exam

The NFST (National Firefighter Selection Test)
Practice tests and study guide available at:

After successful completion of the online exam candidates will participate in:

  • An in-person interview: Consisting of an interview panel with a standard question-and-answer format.
  • Intern Academy: The intern academy is a multi-day in person training course during which applicants will participate in physical fitness, hands on skill performance and team building exercises.

Selections for Firefighter Recruit will be made after completion of these processes, if selected as a Firefighter Recruit, the candidate will attend the Fire Academy. After completing the Fire Academy candidates move into the position of Firefighter.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years of age
  • Certified EMT (or Paramedic)
  • Current CPAT certificate
  • Valid AZ driver’s license

Excellent Benefits

  • The beginning salary for a Firefighter is $69,102 (after completion of the Fire Academy. Paramedics receive additional compensation)

The application period for Spring/Summer 2025 recruitment is closed. The next application period is anticipated to be late 2025/early 2026. This website will be updated when it opens.

Applicant Information and Process for Spring/Summer 2025 Recruitment

  • CPAT certifications not turned in with the application must be received at HR by April 25th at 5pm
  • State of Arizona EMT/Paramedic certifications must be received at HR by the date of hire
  • Applicants who are accepted to move on will have access to take the online National Firefighter Selection Test between April 28th and  April 30th
  • Applicants who do not complete the exam by April 30th will not move on
  • Applicants who successfully pass the online exam will be scheduled for an interview which are scheduled for May 7th, 8th, 9th and 14th, 15th and 16th
  • After the interview successful applicants will be selected for the Intern Academy which is scheduled for;
    • May 21st, 1800 to 2100
    • May 31st, 0700 to 1700
    • June 1st, 0700 to 1700
  • Selections for hire will be made after the Intern Academy for an August Fire Academy
