Citizen’s Police Academy
The Salt River Police Department is pleased to provide the community with an inside look at our practice of local law enforcement through our Citizen Police Academy. The program is comprised of 9 sessions designed to give participants an overview of the department and its functions, responsibilities and operational procedures. Classes are taught by police officers, police executives and highly specialized civilian employees of the SRPD. In addition, citizens have the opportunity to interact with the Chief of Police and other members of the Department.
Throughout the academy, classes are conducted in a variety of formats. These may consist of demonstrations, discussions, lectures and interactive exercises.
There is no cost involved and all class materials are provided to participants. Classes can cover a variety of topics such as:
- SRPD History
- Recruitment and Training
- Police/Fire Communications
- Criminal Investigations
- Evidence Identification and Collection
- DUI Investigations
- Community Policing Programs
- School Resource Officers/Explorers
- Gangs
- Narcotics
- The Bike Team
Activities and demonstrations include:
- Simulated Traffic Stop/Scenario
- K-9 Demonstration
- Salt River Rangers
When Are the Academy Classes?
The Salt River Police Department offers the Citizen’s Police Academy a minimum of once a year. In the past the Citizen’s Police Academy classes would meet one night per week, 2.5 hours per session, for nine weeks. The Salt River Police Department recognizes this can be very difficult to commit to for many individuals, so we have changed the format to a one day session. Now attendees will be given a chance to learn about several key areas of the Salt River Police Department by spending one complete day with us.
The 2018 Citizen’s Police Academy date is currently to be determined, please check back on this page for updates on the next scheduled class.
If you are having difficulty signing up, or you have further questions, please give us a call at 480-850-8200.
