The death of a loved one can be a very difficult time. The Salt River Memorial Services & Cemeteries staff is here for you and your family by offering assistance to help you prepare for services and burials. Burial assistance is offered to all enrolled members living on or off the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.

Wake/Funeral Services
What to do when a loved one passes:
STEP 1 – CONTACT MEMORIAL SERVICES
If you are unsure of what to do or who to call, please contact Memorial Services at (480) 278-7050. The Memorial Services staff is here to guide and assist you through the process.
STEP 2 – SELECT A MORTUARY
The Community is contracted with local mortuaries and will cover all basic mortuary costs, but will only pay up to $3,370 per burial. Enrolled community members are welcome to select any mortuary they choose; however, they will be responsible for all costs exceeding $3,370.00. All mortuary costs will be paid directly to the mortuary chosen.
What’s included in mortuary costs:
- Funeral Director and all paperwork
- Embalming, dressing, and casketing
- Transportation from location of passing to mortuary
- Hearse
- Casket/urn
- Register book with colored memorial cards
- Transportation to Wake/Funeral

Set up an appointment with the selected mortuary. Items or information to bring to the mortuary:
- Cause of death for the death certificate
- Names of pallbearers
- Picture for memorial cards
- Burial attire for your loved one
STEP 3 – SCHEDULE APPOINTMENT WITH MEMORIAL SERVICES
- Provide a picture of your loved one for flier
- Schedule date and times for services
- If a Veteran, Memorial Services will contact Veteran’s Services if you wish
- Select cemetery and grave site location*
*St. Francis Cemetery – must obtain permission from Church Deacon
STEP 4 – OTHER ITEMS FOR THE FAMILY TO CONSIDER
- Select a facilitator/emcee for services
- Contact Church if requesting to have any services at their facilities
- Select a traditional advisor if conducting a traditional ceremony/service
- Write eulogy
- Assign someone to oversee kitchen/nursery
- Plan meal menu and preparation. Food should be prepared or cooked by family members and/or friends. (Day labors and Memorial Services staff are not required to prepare or cook meals)
- Provide extra items needed in kitchen. (Coffee, punch, water, sugar, cream, foil, etc.)
- If showing a slide show, schedule a test presentation prior to the service with Memorial Services staff

Cemetery Services
The cemetery staff is here to assist with burials and complete community requests. The staff maintain three cemeteries and assist with funerals and burials.

Burial Requests
Cemetery staff provides the following for graveside services:
- Headboard with name, date of birth and date of passing
- Outerbox or vault
- Canopy, table, chairs and igloo with water and cups
- Lowering straps for casket
- Staff will prepare gravesite prior to burial, provide tools, and assist with covering of grave during services
- Backhoe will be available, if needed
- Families may request a burn pit after services are completed
Family Hand Digging Grave
Families may hand dig the grave.
- Memorial Services will set up 1 canopy and provide 1 igloo with water and cups.
- Memorial Services will lend shovels and a hand bar.
- The family must designate a family member or friend who will be responsible for receiving and returning the tools.
Residential Set Ups
Families may choose to continue the wake or overnight services at the family residence. The cemetery crew will provide:
- 1 canopy, 8 tables and 30 chairs
- Side curtains are available depending upon the weather forecast. Side curtains may not always available
- 1 trash container and/or request bulk trash pick-up
- 1 ADA portable toilet
Grave damage or headboard replacements
If you see a damaged/sunken grave or need a head board replaced, please call 480-278-7050 or email: PWCustomerService@srpmic-nsn.gov to place a work order.
Graffiti and Other Reporting
If you see any suspicious activity while at any of the Community cemeteries, contact SR Police Dispatch at 480-850-9230 or CALL 9-1-1 FOR ALL EMERGENCIES.
Please report all suspicious activities such as:
- Graffiti
- Grave damage
- Aggressive visitors
- Reckless drivers
- Abandoned vehicles
- Other illegal activities

Facilities
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community has two state of the art facilities for funeral and wake services. One facility is located in Salt River and one facility is located in Lehi.

- Day workers are available to assist Memorial Services staff and families
- Wakes and funerals take scheduling preference. If another family requests to schedule a wake and/or funeral for a loved one, any memorial service must be rescheduled.
- Memorial Hall is closed every first week of July for the annual Reburial Ceremony. All services during this time will be held at Xalychidom Piipaash Nyvaash.
