Corrections Facility
Since 1986, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community has had the concept of opening and operating a new correctional facility. During this time the Salt River Police Department was in-charge of the Detention services and had been concerned about the conditions in the facility.
In 1987 and 1988, the Salt River facility was reviewed and assessed by the National Institute of Corrections (N.I.C.) and the National Academy of Public Administration.
In 1989, the Salt River Community Council passed a resolution that:
- Recognized that the existing detention facility was inadequate,
- The health and safety of inmates held in the facility was a major concern, and
- Additional funds were necessary to adequately address facility problems.
Numerous needs assessments were initiated and updated.
On August 16, 2007, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community moved into a brand new state of the art corrections facility.
Within all these areas of operation the Salt River Department of Corrections believes:
- All people in the facility must be safe.
- All people in the facility deserve to be treated humanely and with respect for their basic human rights.
- While knowing that a personal growth comes from within, inmates will be given the chance for the better.
- Community departments provide rehabilitation services within the facility to remind people that there are consequences for violating the community’s laws.
- Finally, it has an obligation to conserve the community’s resources by operating cost-effectively.
