On January 5, the Salt River Police Department held a ceremony to promote two new commanders; James Sutphen and Jonathan Gann. These officers competed with over 30 applicants from throughout the country. Both officers had been serving as acting commanders for the department during the past year.
ďWith the selection of these two, the people of this Community can feel confident knowing we have a stable administrative team made up of individuals with a long proven record of serving the people of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community,Ē said Chief Patrick R. Melvin.
Commander James Sutphen has a total of 29 years of law enforcement experience, serving the Salt River Police Department for more than 21 years. He currently oversees the Field Operations Bureau, which includes all of Patrol, Criminal Investigations, the Traffic Enforcement Bureau, the Street Crimes Unit, Rangers and Canine. In the past he has been a Lieutenant over the Professional Standards Bureau as well as many other assignments.
Commander Jonathan Gann is a graduate of Northern Arizona University and has been serving the Salt River Police Department for more than 13 years. In 2008, then Sergeant Gann was named as the Supervisor of the Year. In 2013, he was awarded the departmentís Medal of Valor Award and promoted to lieutenant. In 2015, he was named as the Acting Commander overseeing the departmentís Administrative Bureau which includes Records, Communications and Property and Evidence. Commander Gann is also a member of the Departmentís Special Operations Unit.
