The Salt River Honor Guard, which consists of members of the Salt River Fire Department (SRFD) and Salt River Police Department (SRPD), presented the colors at three spring training games played at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick this season. On March 4, March 22 and April 1, the Honor Guard marched onto the field.

“They are looking to have us participate a lot more next season,” said Ray Martinez, commander of the Salt River Honor Guard and a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.

This year the Honor Guard also took part in the Salt River Veterans Pow-Wow parade on March 28, two Phoenix firefighter funerals, and a Federal Bureau of Investigation event.

As for expanding the Honor Guard, Martinez said they would like to bring in more members.

“We’ve been pretty busy both in and outside the Community taking part in events,” he said. “We currently have 10 members from the [Salt River Fire Department], and [the Salt River Police Department] has four or five members but is looking to double that number this year to 10.”
