Seventh graders Briah Johnson, Deja Acosta, and Megan Andrews participated in the Stapley Jr. High Girls intramural basketball team this spring. The team played against other Mesa Jr. High School intramural teams throughout their season.

Intramural sports are provided for seventh and eighth graders and are sponsored by the City of Mesa’s Parks and Recreation Department in cooperation with the schools. The teams provide training and preparedness for students who wish to continue playing on Junior High and high school sports teams.

Johnson #12, Acosta # 21, and Andrews #40 and their teammates have a 4-0 winning season. They won their fourth game on Wednesday, May 1 in a close game of 28-26. The girls ended their season 5-0.

After their regular season the Saber Cat’s played in the Mesa Public Schools Basketball Tournament, May 11, at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Arizona. The girls won two games and made it to the championship game losing against Summit Academy from Mesa 39-35.

“Congratulations to Briah and Deja and the rest of the Stapley Jr. High Intermural Girls Basketball Team for a successful season,” said Leland and Diane Johnson. “It was a heart attack watching these girls play but it was well worth it after every victory they accomplished.”
