Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community member Kaya Hayes, a freshman at Westwood High School in Mesa, plays on the Westwood baseball team as both a pitcher and catcher. At the time of this writing, the Warriors are ranked 70th in the state and have an overall record of 13-14.

“We are improving and doing pretty good as a team,” said Hayes about the Warriors. “Right now I am working on my hitting and pitching. My coach says I’m a great catcher.”

Hayes said the Warriors is a great hitting team. “If you can’t score, then you can’t win,” said Hayes.

“I always look forward to playing against the Mountain View Toros because I went to elementary and junior high with a lot of their players and played club ball with them as well,” Hayes noted. The Warriors beat the Toros on April 16 with a final score of 7-2.
