Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community member Michaela McGertt is No. 13 on the 2012-2013 varsity Toros girls basketball team for Mesa Mountain View, and so far the team is having a good season.
“We are doing good,” said McGertt. “We won all our conference games. The only games we lost was a tournament in La Jolla, California.” The team also played in the Nike tournament, where they received fifth place in their division.
The senior at Mountain View takes a lot of pride in her defense. “I am pretty fast, so I am good at just getting back on defense and stopping people,” said McGertt. “My coaches say that I should be more of a scorer, but I don’t score as much because I’m always thinking that there is a better decision to be made on the court. I am the point guard, so I pretty much set up the plays. I’m always looking for the person before I look to shoot.”
“Our team is doing well. We are currently 12-5 overall, and most importantly, 9-1 in power points. Michaela is one of four seniors on our team,” said head coach Henry Bribiescas.
McGertt has been playing since the young age of 4. Other members of her family play the sport as well, and she said she thinks that’s what inspires her to play. “I just like playing basketball. It comes natural [to me, and] I’ve been playing it all year round. My dad, Wayne McGertt, taught me how to play, and my sister played in high school and her team won state championship.”
“Michaela is a solid part of our team,” said Bribiescas. “She is experienced and a great contributor, she is our point guard and shooting guard. She is in her second year of varsity with us and is quick, likes to drive to the basket and can shoot from the three point line and she is very coachable.”
After high school, McGertt is thinking about going to college out of state.
