New Year’s Mens Basketball Tournament

To kick off the new year, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Recreation Department held its New Years Men’s Basketball Tournament January 10-12 at the Pi-Copa Gym. Nine teams participated in the games.

As the games narrowed down, Gila River’s Komatke team made it to the third-place game playing against Navi/Hopi. The game became competitive right before it was over; with both teams at 71 points, the game went into overtime.

Komatke seemed to have things under control, scoring 2 more points, but at the end Navi/Hopi outscored them. The final score was 77-73.

Next, Navi/Hopi played the Salt River Beeliners for the championship. The Beeliners took the lead for the game and eventually won, 77-56.

The Beeliners players received pullovers and Most Valuable Player went to Ephrian Sloan, who received a trophy, pullover sweatshirt and duffle bag. The Navi/Hopi players received tournament T-shirts. All-Tourney awards went to Wayne Sekaquaptewa, Chris Edaakie and Devin Doughi.

Other All-Tourneys were awarded as follows:
Beeliners: Phillip Edwards, Taylor Hanson and Jarren Thomas
Komatke: Jake Vasquez and Anthony Romero
Warriors: Anthony Anaya and Victor Mendoza

Champions: Beeliners
Runners-up: Navi/Hopi
Third Place: Komatke
