U of A Honors Native American Women of Arizona

gallery-01During a ceremony on April 13 at the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, the university’s Department of Women’s Studies recognized 28 women from eight of the 22 Arizona Indian tribes to be inducted into the Women’s Plaza of Honor, which honors the lives and accomplishments of inspirational women who have enriched the lives of others in Arizona and throughout the world.

Salt River Talent Show

gallery-02Every year, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Education Department hosts a talent show for youth to showcase their talents. The theme of this year’s show, held on May 4 at the Salt River High School auditorium, was “Salt River Idol.” It was the biggest turnout for the annual talent show ever.

Senior Games 2012

gallery-01On April 26 and 27, seniors from several Indian communities gathered at the Salt River Community Building early in the morning for registration and breakfast prior to the Salt River Senior Games.


gallery-01The Red Mountain Duathlon took youth participants on a half-mile run, followed by a 4.5 mile bike ride and ended with a 1-mile run. While the adult competition began with a 1-mile run, then an 8-mile bike ride and ended with a 2-mile run. Individual competitors as well as relay teams took part. The adults and kids arrived, placing their bikes, helmets and water bottles atop their bikes. With their numbers pinned to their tops, the youth runners took their place at the starting line.
