The Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community hosted a youth basketball tournament February 18, for youth in eighth grades and under. The teens have been participating in the tournament all week up to the Saturday evening tournament games.

Teams She Got Game and Angie’s Squad played each other for the girl’s division championship game. Throughout the game both teams played aggressive. She Got Game had the advantage of height and Angie’s Squad had speed, throughout the game No. 32 from Angie’s Squad made several three pointers for her team but by half time the score was 19-11 and She Got Game made the majority of jump shots.

The final score was 38-18 giving the team She Got Game championship for the girls division and Angie’s Squad runner up.

Right after the girls tournament it was time for the boys division to play for championship. During the game Train Rock Boys and Rim County Middle School battled all the way to the end. Train Rock Boys stayed ahead of the eniter game by only several points making Rim County Middle School work harder to make those extra points. Towards the end of the game RCMS did their best to try and catch up by playing strong defense but as they quickly started to catch up they ran out of time making the score 30-38.

The two out of town teams traveled a day’s worth of driving to compete in the boys division. Train Rock Boys came from Utah and Rim County Middle School of Kyenta, Arizona.

We played teams that gave us good competition said Coach Jean Nimrod the team came from Monument Valley, Utah. “We traveled all day on Friday to compete in the tournament this was our first time to participate and was worth the trip.”
