Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members and people from around the Valley participated in the “Beat the Heat” 10-Mile Relay, 2-Mile Run/Walk and Kids’ 1-Mile Run on May 19. Beat the Heat was the final run/walk event before summer hosted by the Salt River Diabetes Program.

Many families arrived at the Salt River High school athletic building and parking lot early Saturday morning to register for both events.

The first event for the morning was the 1-mile race for children ages 12 and under, which was followed by the 10-mile relay. The 10-mile event consisted of two-person teams, with each person taking a different 5-mile route, and was a timed event to be completed in under two hours. The 2-mile Run/Walk took place at the same time.

Prizes were given out to the participants who placed first and second in each event.

The staff of the Diabetes Program would like to thank Salt River High School for the utilization of its facilities, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Public Works Department, and all the volunteers and day workers who have assisted at the Diabetes Program’s run/walk events from September 2011 to now.

“We greatly appreciate all the individuals who came out to run or walk in our events. We will start up our run/walk events again in September,” said Rachel Seepie of the Salt River Diabetes Program.
