Ninety runners took to the pavement on January 28 for the New Year’s Road Race 8K. The event also included a 1-mile run/walk and a 1K (0.06-mile) run for children ages 12 and under.

Fitness Coordinator Rachel Seepie said the race organizers wanted to thank Elizabeth S. Reifel-Skeans from the SRPMIC Life Enhancement and Resource Network (LEARN) for setting up an information table. She also said thanks go out to Salt River High School for providing the facility for the event, and also Public Works for the setup.

The overall winner was Marvin Luna, who participated alongside his wife, Tammie Curtis, and their children, Mackenzie and Adelaide Luna.

“We try to participate in all the runs I see on the Community calendar, and also some I learn about from Rachel Seepie,” Curtis said.

Curtis added that she and her husband are trying to get their children excited about running so that someday they could possibly earn a track and field scholarship to college, following in the footsteps of their father.
