Arizona Best Fest

gallery-01Thousands of Arizona residents flocked to the Arizona State Capitol on Saturday, February 11 and Sunday, February 12 to celebrate the Arizona Centennial at the Arizona Best Fest. The Arizona Best Fest recognized the culturally diverse past, present and future of the entire state. Many local businesses and organizations participated in the celebration, offering entertainment, art, foods and cultural traditions.

Educating The Youth

gallery-02Salt River Elementary School partners with ECEC for activities and instruction throughout the year the elementary school’s kindergarten program every year has interacted with the Early Childhood program to prepare the younger students for their first year of school which is coming up quickly. Salt River Elementary School hosted a Robotics Club team Titians party to celebrate the team’s win last year and discussed their projects to their families who were also present. The celebration took place in the library January 31. The Early Childhood Education Center held their February Healthy Heart event inside the schools cafetorium February 9.  Many government departments participated in the event from promoting healthy lifestyles such as staying active to eating right, dangers in lead poisoning and Diabetes Prevention Program was on hand to give health checkups. 

New Year's Roadrace

gallery-01Ninety runners took to the pavement on January 28 for the New Year’s Road Race 8K. The event also included a 1-mile run/walk and a 1K (0.06-mile) run for children ages 12 and under. Fitness Coordinator Rachel Seepie said the race organizers wanted to thank Elizabeth S. Reifel-Skeans from the SRPMIC Life Enhancement and Resource Network (LEARN) for setting up an information table. She also said thanks go out to Salt River High School for providing the facility for the event, and also Public Works for the setup.


gallery-01Government employees created eight teams to compete in this year’s first employees co-ed basketball tournament held January 27 at the Pi-Copa gym. The tournament was hosted by the Salt River Recreation department. Community members Mysty Hayes, T.C. Carlos and Darreian Hayes all play on Mesa’s Westwood High basketball team. Mysty plays on the freshmen team who are 16-1 and she also suits up and plays on Junior Varsity (JV) along with T.C and Darreian. The JV is 11-6 in their division. The high school Varsity is 14-11. Nike’s N7 line recently held an afternoon photo shoot for Boston Red Sox’s No.2 Jacoby Ellsbury, February 8 inside the Pi-Copa Gym. The staff from Nike used the Gym to do a Photo shoot for the new N7 products that will soon be available this year.
