The Men’s Southwest Baseball Tournament took place August 3-6 with games taking place at the Salt River, Lehi and Salt River High School baseball fields.
Twenty-four teams participated, including the Salt River Blue Jays and Lehi Raiders. The Blue Jays lost to the Indians in their first game of the tournament sending them to the loser’s bracket. Along with them, the Lehi Raiders were defeated by the Casa Grande A’s.
The Guadalupe Yaquis arrived at the championship by way of the winner’s bracket, while the Indians played in the game prior to the championship with hopes of getting the opportunity to win the title.
In the championship game, the Yaquis were the first to get on the board with two singles to right field and a throwing error to earn the 1-0 lead. But in the top of the second inning the Indians answered back. Their batting order began working the pitcher with two singles to right field, a walk and another single to bring two runs across the plate. The next Indians batter hit an RBI-triple scoring two additional runs. A sac- fly by their eighth batter brought in the final run of the inning to take the 5-1 lead.
The Yaquis capitalized on an error by the Indian’s centerfielder and added two more runs, trailing 5-3. But the Indians increased their lead in the bottom of the third inning after a batter reaches on error and advances to second base on a single to right field. A sacrifice-fly brought in one run, followed by two RBI doubles to improve their lead 8-3.
The Yaquis added a run in the top of the fifth inning to trail 8-4. The Indians sealed their win in the top of the fifth inning, after adding three runs and winning the game 13-4.
