Junior High Team
The Salt River Junior High wrestling team finished the season at Mountain View High School in Marana. They were one of 55 teams competing, placing 47th overall at the end.

Keith Taylor finished the season at 0-6. He is a seventh grader and should be back next year leading the junior high team.

Aaron Rivers dropped to the 142 lb. weight class. He began the meet with a loss to Safford High School and wins over Cactus and Foothills. He then lost to Benson High School in the consolation bracket. His final season standings are a 9-6 record and fourth place at the Amphi High School Invitational.

Blaine Hillis competed in the 167-lb. weight class. He received a forfeit in the first round and pinned his next two opponents from Round Valley High School and Desert Sky Middle School in Tucson. He lost to the eventual state runner-up from Kyrene in Tempe in the quarterfinals. He then lost to Benson High School in the consolations. Hillis ended his eighth-grade season at 13-10. He placed second at Deer Valley, fourth at Safford and second at Amphi High School.

Adam Perez represented Salt River Junior High in the 180-lb weight class. He posted two losses to Cross and Desert Ridge. He finished the season at 7-9, with a fourth-place finish at Amphi High School.

Alex Apodaca, heavyweight, wrestled to a 3-2 record at state. He began with a pin over Safford and a loss to Morenci. Apodaca bounced back to beat both Cross and Cottonwood. He lost to Sahuarita High School and ended a good season at 18-9. He placed second at Deer Valley and had two first-place finishes at two other Deer Valley tournaments and a second at Amphi High School.

High School Team
Hosteen Smith placed second at the 2A metro region tournament. He pinned an opponent from Yuma Catholic and lost to Phoenix Christian High School. His record is 27-23.

Lloyd Lewis is at 36-12 and placed second at the regional tournament. He pinned his opponent from San Pasqual and lost to a defending state champion in the finals.

Taneasha Thomas did not place at the regional tournament. Her record for a first-year varsity wrestler is 7-30. She will compete in Girls’ State on February 27.

Hosteen Begay-Smith wrestled in the first round against CJ Curry of San Manuel in the first round at state, February 12 and 13 in Prescott. Lloyd Lewis wrestled B. Benton of Benson High School, also in the first round. Results were unavailable at press time.
