The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Recreation Department’s Social Programs Division presented the annual Girl Scouts All-Indian Men’s Basketball Tournament on January 30. The Girl Scouts organization hosts the tournament every year as a fundraiser for their junior and cadet Girl Scout troops.
The Rez Runners team dominated the tournament—that is, until the championship game against the Community’s Salt River Warriors. The final game between the Rez Runners and Salt River Warriors was a real nail-biter, with fans on the edge of their seats. The Rez Runners stayed ahead of the Warriors until halftime, but then the Warriors caught up to tie the game at 61-61.
The teams had only a few minutes to catch their breath before going into overtime.
Finally, the Salt River Warriors scored a shot, winning the game by one point. It was an unexpected but very satisfying win. San Xavier took fourth place this year, and Nations came in third.
“The championship game was the best game out of the whole tournament,” said Sera Gould.
In addition to annual basketball tournaments, the Girl Scouts earn funds through cookie sales, bake sales and troop dues. The funds raised go toward end-of-the-year awards and an annual trip. Every year this basketball tournament gets bigger and more competitive, with both local and traveling teams competing.
The Girl Scouts would like to thank the Recreation Department, Randy Gill, the referees, and of course the fans for all the support and hard work that made this tournament successful.
The next fundraiser for the Girls Scouts will be the Not Too Tall Six Feet and Under Basketball Tournament, March 24–27.
