The Salt River Co-Ed Flag Football League began the current season on November 3 at the Recreation Department football field. With seven games already executed, playoffs are set to begin on December 6 at 7 p.m. and wrap up at 9 p.m. on December 8 with the championship game.
Seven teams are currently participating in the league. Games were played every Monday and Wednesday at 7, 8 and 9 p.m. Every team participated in six games and also qualifies for playoffs.
League Coordinator David Willis said this is the third year this particular league was offered. It is open to any members, employees, friends and families in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
“It is important to offer adult sports, because it is a stress reliever, a way to stay active and an opportunity to spend time with your friends and family,” Willis said.
He emphasized the importance of having some activity outside of your busy everyday life to participate in and enjoy.
“We have had great turnout for the flag football league; we stopped at forming eight teams, but we are thinking about doing more (teams) next season,” he said.
Willis said the activities that the SRPMIC Recreation Department provides to Community seniors, adults and children give them an outlet for social networking and healthy activity.
“These alternatives benefit the young as well as the Community’s elders,” he added.
The flag football champions and runners-up will be determined by the two best records during the season. If two teams have the same record, a head-to-head match-up will determine the winner. If three or more teams are tied, the winner will be determined by least points allowed.
