Community Members Participate in Piestewa Games

Numerous sporting events took place in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and the City of Fountain Hills during the annual Lori Piestewa National Native American Games, held July 15–18. The games are in honor of Army Spc. Lori Piestewa, who was killed during an ambush in Nasiriyah, Iraq, in March 2003. Piestewa became the first Native American woman to die in combat on foreign soil.


Learning to Dribble for the Summer

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community youth worked on their basketball skills at the Salt River Basketball Camp, held at the Salt River High School gym July 19–23. This was the sixth annual Community basketball camp, and it’s always a popular event because, for one, it takes place indoors, and everyone who lives in this 110-degree weather wants to be inside.


Mesa Westwood Little League All-Stars Shine

Congratulations to Kaya Schurz and Aaron Makil of the Mesa Westwood Little League (MWLL) All-Stars Team! Their team represented MWLL well by making it to the championship game for the district title. The championship game was held on Saturday, July 10. They gave it their all and received second place. The team was presented with a trophy for all their hard work.
