Let the Countdown Begin … to 2018!
Ten, nine, eight …
Just 10 seconds before the clock struck midnight many Community members and guests counted down to bring in the New Year at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community’s New Year’s Eve Celebration.
On Sunday, December 31, the New Year’s Eve Celebration was held at the Salt River Gym parking lot from 4 p.m. to midnight. Organizers said well over 3,000 Community members and guests took part in the activities, which included carnival rides, a game truck, food vendors, a chicken-scratch dance and a spectacular fireworks show!
The event kicked off at 4 p.m., when the carnival rides opened. Several food vendors were kept busy through the evening, selling fry bread, tacos, hot dogs, popcorn, lemonade and coffee.
For $5, you could purchase a wristband for unlimited carnival rides. This year’s new attraction was a video-game truck. The kids enjoyed the video-game fun.
Besides the carnival, Southern Scratch from Tohono O’odham played chicken scratch music inside the gym, which is always a crowd favorite. The music was loud and upbeat, enough to get people dancing on the dance floor. Many people were talking and laughing with family and friends throughout the event.
First, I would like to thank Council for sponsoring the annual New Year’s Eve Celebration,” said Julie Sepulveda, Community Relations events coordinator. “Many families rang in the New Year through fun ride attractions and carnival games or danced the night away to the sounds of the band playing in the dance hall. This year’s New Year’s Eve Celebration turned out to be a very successful and memorable event because of all of those who joined us in celebrating the New Year by either participating in the fun activities that were available or by helping out behind the scenes and putting on a great show.”
As 2017 drew to a close, some gathered near the gym to be near family and friends when the countdown began. Others got ready to watch the fireworks.
At the strike of midnight, the night sky lit up with fireworks over the Community and the balloon drop took place inside the gym. The New Year brought smiles, cheers and hope for a bright 2018.
Happy New Year everyone!
