Tribes Now Have Greater Authority to Prosecute and Punish Criminals on Indian Lands

On July 29, President Barack Obama signed into law the Tribal Law and Order Act, which will provide greater authority for tribal law enforcement and courts to prosecute and punish criminals on Indian reservations across the United States. The legislation was passed by Congress a week prior to Obama signing it in a White House ceremony featuring tribal leaders from across Indian Country. Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community President Diane Enos was one of those present on the stand watching as Obama signed the legislation.

Student’s Passion for Journalism Leads Her to National Project

After an interest in photography sparked Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community youth Shanae Conger to work as an intern at Au-Authm Action News, it led her to even more opportunities. Each year, the Work Inforcement Act (WIA) program provides summer jobs to students in the various areas in the tribal governemnt.

Piipaash Gourd Rattle Making Class

About 15 or so individuals from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community took part in the second session of the Piipaash Gourd Rattle-Making Class, held on the morning of July 24, at the Huhugam Ki Museum. The class is one of several offered by the Cultural Resources Program to help Community members reconnect with the ways of their ancestors. A couple of the class members were as young as 14.
