Three Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members played in the Swoosh Summer Slam basketball tournament on August 5 and 6 in Garden Grove, California.

Community members Deja Acosta, Julianne Carlisle and Mariana Porter are members of the local Run N Gun team. SRPMIC Recreation Department staff member Ephraim Sloan coaches the girls.

The tournament started out on Saturday with a win against OC Dream, 27-25. The team continued on, with the girls playing a great game against CG Select, winning again, 48-19.

The real battle began on Sunday, where the girls were behind, but eventually they made their way back to get the win. In the first game they played against the Swoosh Elite team and were down by 10 points at halftime. During the second half, the “team woke up defensively,” Sloan said, and ended up winning the game, 53-35. The last game was played against West Coast Dream, and the girls won, 47-32.

The girls are preparing to participate in another California tournament, the ninth annual Elite Oktoberfest-West basketball tournament in Anaheim, on September 23. This tournament is a NCAA viewing tournament for college coaches to watch players with hopes of recruiting.

According to Sloan, aside from the Elite tournament, the girls from Run N Gun will continue to play in various tournaments around the Valley every weekend until the end of October. The girls will be preparing for the upcoming basketball season in November.
