Are You Worried About Child Car Seats?

The SRPMIC Injury Prevention Program can make sure that your child is safe and secure in a car seat while driving.

Having children is a blessing, but it can also be scary. There are so many dangers in this world that it becomes stressful trying to protect your children from everything. I experienced this worry when I had my first child. I knew there were hazards that were out of my control, but I also knew there were steps I could take to keep my child safe—things like making sure my infant was sleeping on its back, making sure that I covered electrical outlets with protective plugs, and making sure that my child was properly secured in a car seat.

Well, I was doing two of those three things correctly.

I had a child passenger-safety technician, a firefighter at my local station, check my car seat. To my surprise, the car seat that I just spent more than $100 on was installed incorrectly; worse, it was found on a list of car seats that were being recalled for safety reasons due to a manufacturing error.

The Injury Prevention Program is working diligently to help ease parents’ worry concerning car seats. For Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members, we offer a car-seat distribution program through which you can get a free car seat. Not only will we give you a free car seat, but we also will give you the education to properly install your car seat, and future seats, for your child. Our program offers convertible car seats, forward-facing car seats and booster seats. These seats will accommodate children from infants to youth under 4 feet 9 inches tall (this is the minimum height a child needs to be in order to ride without a car seat).

Numerous car-seat safety events take place in the Community throughout the year. At these events you will have the opportunity to ask a certified child passenger-safety technician questions you might have specifically concerning your child, your vehicle and your car seat. It’s a great way to make sure you are transporting your children correctly.
