SRPMIC President Delbert Ray, Sr., throws out the ceremonial first pitch.

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community President Delbert Ray, Sr., and Vice-President Martin Harvier opened the 2017 spring training season with a strike.

Ray and Harvier each threw out the ceremonial first pitches of the new season for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies on February 25 at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

Ray, with his customized Rockies jersey and a Diamondbacks hat, threw his pitch to an Arizona Diamondbacks player, while Harvier, wearing a black Salt River Fields shirt with logos of each team on a sleeve, threw to a Colorado Rockies player. Afterward, Ray and Harvier posed for a photo with the players.

It’s tradition for SRPMIC leaders to throw out the season’s first pitches before the start of the first game.

The award-winning ballpark, which opened in 2011, is home to both professional teams, which are members of Arizona’s Cactus League. Salt River Fields hosts a spring training game every day from February 25 to March 28.

The Rockies beat the D-backs 8-4 in the opener on a picture-perfect Valley winter afternoon.
