Mesa Westwood Little League Champions

The Mesa Westwood Goldies took Championship of their division in the Mesa Westwood Little League, the team included brothers Kaleb, Xavier and Julian Lucero, and their teammate Frankie Diaz.

A handful of youth from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community participated in Mesa’s Westwood Little League for baseball and softball this season. The league includes teams playing majors and minors baseball, machine pitch and minors softball.

Tournament games were played on May 10, and two teams with members from the Community, the Goldies and the Little Minors, won the championship in their division.

Elena Salazar and sisters Sandra and Makayla Willeford played for the Little Minors, ages eight to 11 years-of-age. The team rallied from a seven-run deficit to win the championship, 13-11.

Machine pitch baseball team the Goldies was coached by Roland Miranda. The players were ages seven and eight and included brothers Kaleb, Xavier and Julian Lucero, and Frankie Diaz. The team finished the season with 10 wins and two losses.

During the tournament games, the Goldies beat the Gray Wolves, 16-15. On May 12, the Goldies beat the Venom 12-11 in the championship game.

Villegas continued, “No one expected us to win any games, let alone six games. This year, we proved those expectations wrong, and a lot of our success is because the seniors laid down the rules of the game. They said to the younger players, ‘Come, work hard and give it everything you have.’ They really led by example. No matter how tired they were, they would get up and do it. No complaints.”
