Lady Eagles Strive to Win Every Game to Reach Playoffs

Salt River beat Heritage-Laveen 58-15 in the home opener on November 30.

The Salt River High School girls’ basketball team is gearing up for a playoff push.

As of mid-January, the Lady Eagles were 8-2 and seeded third in Canyon Athletic Association (CAA) Division II. The remaining regular-season games will play a huge role in whether the Lady Eagles make it to the playoffs to defend their state title.

“We dropped our last two games against some really good teams, but we really want to clean that up. I feel like we want to get better offensively as a team,” said girls basketball coach Dino Puccetti. “That’s my job, to get us there. You’ll see a continuance of the girls working hard and working together. We’re going to continue to put pressure on teams during games, and we’re just trying to grow as a team this second half of the season. We’re getting ready for the playoffs.”

Salt River play Heritage-Laveen.
Puccetti said that the team is not thinking about championships right now. “This team is young and different than last year’s team, which had a few seniors on it. I think the talent is there, and I think there’s some experienced teams we have to go through. We want to be playing the best basketball by the end of the year, and I think we have a chance to get there,” said Puccetti.

“Our goal is to win every game. If a championship happens, it happens. But we’re not defining this season on a championship right now.”

The CAA playoffs start on February 11. This is where the competition starts. The top eight teams in each division make the playoffs. They’re seeded one through eight, and the league will determine if there will be a bye involved. The top four teams will get a home game and every other game will be on a neutral floor.

The Lady Eagles host Paragon Science on February 2 and Paradise Valley Christian on February 7 before visiting Bella Vista on February 8 and ending the regular season at Thunderbird Adventist on February 9.
