Through the sponsorship of Ellie and Michael Ziegler, 156 youth from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (BGCGS) Red Mountain and Lehi branches were taken on a back-to-school shopping spree at Kohl’s Desert Ridge on July 28.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the Zieglers have helped low-income families buy new school clothes, shoes and supplies. Kohl’s Desert Ridge also helped to stretch the money by offering a 20 percent discount.

This year, BGCGS partnered with Salt River Community Schools, which identified 57 additional youth in need. Each child shopped with a volunteer “shoperone” to purchase back-to-school essentials worth up to $120.

Over the last five years, the Zieglers have donated $500,000 to this effort.

Club members were able to shop with members of various organizations. Club members shopped at Kohl’s with volunteer chaperones.
“Michael and I strive to create non-profit, corporate and community collaborations for those in need. This program allows the Club’s most vulnerable members to pursue their dreams and academic success,” said event founder Ellie Ziegler in a news release.

“To inject more excitement into our fifth year, we’ve streamlined the program to serve more then 710 children and teens during three high-energy ‘Prep Rallies’ featuring shopping, games, books, backpacks and special appearances by local sports personalities,” said Michael Ziegler, also in a news release.
