From June 19 through June 23, Salt River Police Department Animal Control Technician Traveleah Chavez attended and successfully completed the Basic Animal Control Certification Training School that was hosted by the nationally accredited Animal Control Training Services (ACT) in Marana.

The course consisted of 40 hours of instruction covering a variety of topics, including federal, state and local laws; humane and safe care, capture and restraint of animals; handling of aggressive and dangerous dogs; Animal Control Officer safety; interpersonal communication; report writing; courtroom testimony; animal control investigations; evidence collection; and use of equipment. Successful completion required mandatory attendance during all the training and a minimum passing score of 80 percent on a written examination to receive certification as an Animal Control Officer (ACO).

“Ms. Chavez is a valuable member of the Salt River Police Department team, and we congratulate her on this very important accomplishment and distinction receiving this level of certification,” said SRPD Chief of Police Karl G. Auerbach. “Chavez serves the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community daily by responding to calls for service or talking with Community members about a wide range of animal-control matters, many times sharing her extensive knowledge and skills about handling animals and at times requiring the enforcement of our Salt River Code of Ordinances. Receiving the Animal Control Training (ACT) certification is another example of her dedication, loyalty and continuous efforts to provide excellent service to our Community. Chavez has a great attitude and relationship with our Community; she’s always demonstrating a priority to protect the Community, public and animal welfare.”

Auerbach continued, “Our Animal Control Program is another example of our SRPD proactive Community-based policing programs. I’m really proud to have Ms. Chavez on the SRPD. Her actions and efforts are an excellent example of Service, Dedication and Professionalism!”
