Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members were sprinkled all over July’s 15th Annual Native American Basketball Invitational (NABI), including on one team from halfway across the world. The Ak-Chin Indian Community hosted the near-weeklong tournament in Maricopa from July 9 to 15. A total of 128 high school–age teams (64 boys teams and 64 girls teams) brought their talents from more than 300 different tribes. Every year, Native American high school athletes play in NABI to represent their tribes and showcase their talent in arguably the most competitive Native sports tournament in the country, with hopes of gaining the attention of college basketball recruiters.
