Piipaash Matasheevm Gathering Keeping Traditions Alive in Lehi

On Saturday, April 23, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Lehi District hosted the Piipaash Matasheevm, a social gathering, at the Lehi festival grounds. It was a time for Community members and members of the sister tribes to come together for a day of chiyer (bird) singing and dancing.

In recognition of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, special events took place in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community all month, including a workshop called “Identifying the Effects of Domestic Violence in Children and Young Adults.”
 
Fifth Annual Special Needs and Diversability Expo

The Fifth Annual Special Needs and Diversability Expo was held at the Community Building on the morning of April 12. The five-hour event was organized by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Special Needs Resources Program and was a chance for representatives from various community programs to inform people about the special-needs resources available in the Community and the Valley.
 
Kamehameha Schools Visit Explores Common Themes in Cultural Education Programs

On the morning of Wednesday, April 13, a delegation of four teachers from the Kamehameha Schools school system in Hawaii and two representatives from Arizona State University visited the Salt River Schools. The visitors were here to learn about the O’odham and Piipaash cultural education programs offered to students enrolled in Salt River Schools and to explore common themes, challenges and opportunities in providing students with cultural education.
