On Friday, June 24, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Recreation Department held a Youth Summer Day Camp at the Community Building. The kids participating that day were treated to appearances by two special guests: the Phoenix Suns Gorilla and the Phoenix Mercury Scorch team mascots.
After playing basketball in the Salt River Gym, the kids sat on the bleachers and listened to an announcement over the intercom that there was a surprise coming. The children clapped and screamed, welcoming their favorite mascots from the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury.
During the rest of the afternoon, the kids participated in fun activities with Scorch and Gorilla.
This was just one of the fun days offered at Youth Day Camp for the kids. According to Sera Gould, social program coordinator II, “The Youth Day Camp takes place Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., for children ages 6 to 12 years old. Our day [starts with] a light breakfast at 7:30 a.m. On Monday and Tuesday there are classes that range from cake decorating and healthful living to Cultural Day.” During the remainder of the week, the kids enjoy fun activities in the gymnasium, as well as field trips.
