The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community’s very own Salt River Lady Eagles varsity basketball team has a record of 17-1 and is the No. 1 seed in CAA Division I. The girls have been doing a fantastic job. There are two senior starters, Lucy Sances and Ariana Salenas, and four seniors total on the team this year. The team is almost at the end of the season, with one game left, and if they win then it’s straight on to the CAA semifinals.

“The seniors have been great leaders; they encourage the younger players and always show up to practice,” said their head coach, Dino Puccetti. “And the younger players are only going to get better throughout the years.”

Seniors Sances and Salenas have both played a lot of minutes and do a great job at leadership, as well as Jazmin Wolters and Renee Pacheco. On February 4, the SRHS varsity basketball teams played their final home game and it was “Senior Night” for the Class of 2016. The game was played against Leading Edge II, and the Lady Eagles won, with a high score of 62-31. During Senior Night, four senior girls on the Lady Eagles team and their parents were recognized.

The Lady Eagles beat Sequoia Pathways, the defending Division II champions, by 20 points on their home court. The Lady Eagles also beat them by two points at Salt River’s home game.

Freshman Justine Cooper is back on the team this year; she was also all-state last year and played in the state games. A few girls from last year’s team who were junior high students are with the high school team this year as well: Makenzie Gonzales, Layla Shaw and Desiree Pacheco.

Playoffs start tonight, Thursday, February 18. If the Lady Eagles win, then they travel to the semifinals tomorrow, and the CAA state championship is February 24. A fan bus is available (see sidebar for travel information).

“This group of kids has been an outstanding pleasure to coach and has been very dedicated, hardworking and talented,” said Puccetti. “Throughout the season they have been unselfish, and [that] is why they are successful.”
