Thanksgiving Dinner Brings Community Together

Dozens of Community members came out on a beautiful day for the Community Thanksgiving meal.

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community held its Annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Saturday, November 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Salt River Community Building parking lot. Community members came together to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal, a turkey-calling contest, live music and entertainment.

The program began with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by the Salt River Girl Scouts Brownie and Daisy Troop, followed by the blessing of the food by SRPMIC Council Member Archie Kashoya. SRPMIC President Delbert Ray, Sr. shared some words about feeling thankful for coming out to events like this which can bring Community together. Then he handed it over for an introduction from 2016-17 Red Mountain Eagle Pow-Wow Princess Kennise McGertt and 2016-17 Miss Salt River Runner-up Deja Acosta, who gave their thanks as well.

The Thanksgiving dinner included turkey, dressing, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, beans, corn, squash, salsa, rolls, pumpkin pie, soda and water.

Live music was provided by Onk-Akimel Waila and Mariachi Rubor, who played while Community members ate, talked and laughed among each other. For the kids, there was large variety of bounce houses out on the grassy football field, along with a kettle popcorn concession stand.

All in all, Thanksgiving brought everyone together on a beautiful day for good food and companionship, outdoor fun and games.
