Team Wrecreation (Recreation Department) played against the Basket Brawlers (SRPMIC Administration) for the championship of a double-elimination basketball tournament at the Friendship Park basketball courts on April 2. The tournament, which was held throughout March, was sponsored by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community WellPath program of the Human Resources Department.
During March, employee athletes from 10 Community departments participated in basketball games during lunchtime, leading up to the April 2 championship game.
“I like playing in the March Madness Tournament every year,” said Ephraim Sloan, Recreation coordinator I of social programs and a member of team Wrecreation.
Sloan said it was something to look forward to as a SRPMIC employee.
“I enjoy playing outdoors, getting some exercise in and playing against the other departments. This year’s tournament run was fun. We lost the first game and came through the loser’s bracket, beating Administration by 2 in the championship game. Overall it was another good turnout, [and we’re] looking forward to next year’s tournament,” said Sloan.
Wrecreation finished the employee tournament as champions for the second year, with a final score of 34-32. They also won the Traveling Trophy.
Employees who played in the games earned WellPath points for healthy participation, which can go toward their annual leave or other incentives.
Earlier that day there was a three-mile walk for employees to help celebrate National Employee Benefits Day.
