Talking Stick Resort Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members and their families helped Talking Stick Resort celebrate its fifth anniversary with a celebration in the grand ballroom on April 18. Casino Arizona’s Ramon Martinez was the evening’s MC. “Many of you remember not having air conditioning or running water. Many of [our] members had to haul water. [But] someone out there had a dream, a vision, a relative and or a leader who pushed for this dream (building a casino), and here we are today proudly celebrating five years of the Talking Stick Resort,” said Martinez.

Cory McCloskey From Fox 10 Visits SRES: "Cory Goes Back to School"

The students at Salt River Elementary School were very excited as they anticipated the arrival of Fox 10 weatherman Cory McCloskey on the morning of April 22. The morning was a fabulous weather day: clear, sunny and near 70 degrees. Many of the children were looking forward to meeting McCloskey and getting the opportunity to be in one of the live video feeds in that day’s morning news segment on KSAZ Channel 10.


 

Indian Law Conference Celebrates 40 years of Tribal Sovereignty

This year, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community hosted the Federal Bar Association’s 40th Annual Indian Law Conference at the Talking Stick Resort on April 9 and 10. Legal practitioners, judges, government representatives and tribal leaders gathered to discuss governance issues and possible opportunities for Indian Country.


 

SRES Students Engage with Curiosity Rover Scientist

Students in the Salt River Elementary School (SRES) S.T.E.M. Talk program had the opportunity on April 14 to see a brief PowerPoint presentation and speak to Dr. Ashwin Vasavada, senior scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, and project scientist for the Curiosity Mars rover, which is part of the Mars Science Laboratory project. Vasavada has been deputy project scientist for NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory project since 2004, and in 2015 he took over as project scientist to coordinate the efforts of an international team of scientists working on the project.
