Throughout the week leading up to Super Bowl Sunday, football-themed events took place throughout the Valley of the Sun, including on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.

The Courtyard Marriott Scottsdale Salt River was the official Courtyard Marriott hotel of Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix. On Monday, January 26, Courtyard TV filmed a commercial featuring television host Rich Eisen of the NFL Network; Eric Decker, a wide receiver with the New York Jets; and Demaryius Thomas, a wide receiver with the Denver Broncos.

“Hosting events like this within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community will continue to help the Talking Stick Cultural Entertainment District become more prominent as a must-see place to visit when in Scottsdale,” said Ann Cvelich, general manager of the Courtyard Marriott Scottsdale Salt River.

The three also went undercover as hotel staff, making surprise appearances as some guests were checking into the hotel. They would ask the guests if they wanted a “Super Bowl Check-In,” to which guests would reply, “What is a Super Bowl Check-In?” Then Eisen would come out from the back and surprise the guests with tickets to the Super Bowl.

“As the NFL season is wrapping up and we begin our high leisure demand season, our hotel will continue to be a hub of excitement during the spring training season,” continued Cvelich. “We are always looking to host events at our one-of-a-kind hotel. Our culturally rich hotel offers unique décor that embodies the spirit of gathering—perfect for your family and friends. Our central location puts them within reach of Scottsdale’s finest attractions, shopping and dining, with complimentary shuttle service within a 3-mile radius of the hotel.”

On Saturday, January 31, the Courtyard Salt River held a tailgate party for 250 people in the lobby, which featured a special appearance by Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer. Eisen interviewed Palmer, asking about his views on several players who have played in the Super Bowl, such as fellow teammates Larry Fitzgerald and Darnell Dockett.

Palmer spoke positively about his two teammates. About Fitzgerald, Palmer said, “He is phenomenal. He has played in the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl as well. If you watch him play now, compared to how he played five years ago, you can notice the difference. He is going inside and blocking, and his role really changed and he can still play the game.” Palmer called Dockett “a pillar on the team” and said he “was just as much fun.” He also discussed Tom Brady of the New England Patriots.

“The tailgate event was an invitation-only event for the top customers of our hotel, including local dignitaries from the [SRPMIC] Tribal Council, our board of directors, CEOs of local companies, and our most valuable local guests and Marriott Rewards members.” “Both of these events were a huge success for our hotel due to the amount of attendees for the tailgate and the amount of press we received for hosting the ‘Courtyard Camera’ commercial,” said Cvelich. After the Q&A was over, fans took photographs with Palmer and continued eating and drinking during the tailgate party.
