2015 Unity Run Marks Its 20th Year – An O’odham Tradition

The 2015 Unity Run began on March 15 at Scuk Do’ag (Black Mountain), located within the San Xavier Village of the Tohono O’odham Nation, then traveled through other villages of the Tohono O’odham Nation, the Ak-Chin Indian Community and the Gila River Indian Community, ending at S’vegium Do’ag (Red Mountain) on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community on March 21.

Salt River Excelling at Math (STREAM) Prepares Students for College

Salt River High School (SRHS) has completed its second year of implementing the STREAM: Salt River Excelling At Math program, which resulted in 15 students completing the applied-math classes to earn a college credit from Arizona State University (ASU). The program, STREAM ASU, is in its second year at Salt River High School and includes faculty oversight by SRHS teachers Richelle Etsitty and Eric Barton, Sr. School Inst. Aide. Last year, ASU faculty came out to SRHS, and this year the students were able to go once a week to the ASU campus for classes.


 

O’odham-Piipaash History to Be Featured on Travel Channel

On Thursday, March 12, former Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community President Diane Enos and Brian Unger, host of the Travel Channel’s new series Time Traveling with Brian Unger, met up at Mesa Grande Cultural Park in Mesa and toured Salt River Fields at Talking Stick to explore the history of Native American ballgames and how this ties in with O’odham and Piipaash history. The Travel Channel was surprised and walked away with a whole new understanding.

 

Community Youth Celebrate Hawaiian and Polynesian Cultures at Aloha Festival

On March 7-8, Tempe Beach Park was transformed into a tropical island for the 21st Annual Arizona Aloha Festival. Throughout the course of this two-day celebration, entertainment, food, vendors and cultural demonstrators teamed up to give the Valley an unforgettable Hawaiian experience.
