Over Labor Day Weekend, the Salt River Lady Warriors, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community’s newly established girls junior high basketball team, played in their second tournament at the Inspire Courts Labor Day Classic in Chandler. The girls played against other competitive teams from around the Valley, including another team from Salt River.
The Lady Warriors took the championship in this tournament with a victory against former NBA player Mike Bibby’s club team, Team Bibby. “We actually took our first loss to Team Bibby in the beginning of the tournament, but we came back to play against them in the championship game, and with the girls’ hard work and dedication, the Lady Warriors came out on top,” said Raina Thomas, the proud mother of players Julianne and Lynnyice Carlisle.
The team consists mainly of junior high girls from Salt River, with two girls hailing from surrounding cities and one girl coming from Flagstaff to play. The team consistently practices twice a week, with at least one day of intense basketball clinic and one day of strength building and conditioning, giving the girls a total of four days out of the week dedicated to enhancing their basketball skills.
The girls junior high basketball team was organized in August by coaches Scott Cooper, Shawn Lytle and Adam Rodriguez, who also assists in managing the team’s events and practices.
The Lady Warriors will be playing in the Las Vegas Halloween Hoop Festival which will take place on October 25 and 26.
