During the 12th annual Senior Quechan Olympics held May 15-17, the Salt River Seniors chair volleyball team, Salt River Thunder, hoped to bring home the championship trophy.

six team members, mostly seniors from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, traveled with the Salt River Senior Center to the games. The players on the team are Gal Grey, Lori Loma, Roberta Collins, Myra Schurz, Ruth Perkins, Sheron Manuel and Guadalupe Mariscales.

"It was a tough competition,” said Sheron Manuel.

“We played four games to work our way up to the fourth-place game,” said Gal Grey. “We lost to Baja, a team from Fort McDowell, and we were given fourth place.”

The team continues to practice every Tuesday and Thursday at the Lehi Gym. Their team captain, Tony Dallas, mentioned it was the team’s third game of the year. The next game will be in later on this month and another will be in July, the first being in Gila River and the other in northern Arizona.

“We plan to bring a championship trophy home to add to the collection here in Lehi’s trophy case,” said Dallas.
