SRHS Wrestling Squad Dominates the Competition

Over the holiday break, most families enjoyed their time off from work and school. A handful of families, however, put in time to work out and kept a keen eye on their food intake as the Salt River High School wrestling team hosted their first of three home tournaments, the Holiday Multi Meet, on December 28.

It’s Official: UNITY Headquarters Makes a Move to Mesas

On Monday, December 30, the grand opening of the new headquarters office for United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) took place in downtown Mesa. The move to Arizona marks the start of a new journey for UNITY, which had been based in Oklahoma for the last 37 years.

 

Lunch & Learn: “Archaeology Work and Cultural Practices in the Community”

On December 27, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members and employees sat in on a Lunch and Learn presentation, “Archaeology Work and Cultural Practices in the Community,” sponsored by the Cultural Resources Department (CRD) and the Community Development Department (CDD). The session was held at the CRD office and led by instructors Tom Wright, CDD staff archaeologist, and Shane Anton, manager of the CRD Cultural Preservation Program. The goal of these presentations is to expand cultural awareness among new Community employees and interested Community members.

Growing up on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, I learned to live with the high number of dogs roaming the area. If you’re new to the Community, you may hear the term “rez dog” given to the dog(s) that sit in the water features at the Two Waters Complex during hot summer days. A dog may be a stray, or if it’s fortunate, it has a home. The sad reality is that many of these dogs are strays, chased off from a home that is unable to afford caring for it or that already has too many dogs. Or, it was dropped off in the Community by someone in a surrounding city.
