Jacoby Ellsbury Hosts Baseball Clinic for Native Youth

On Saturday, January 11, the third annual Jacoby Ellsbury Baseball Camp took place at the Salt River Fields in Scottsdale. Ellsbury is of Navajo decent and a registered member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes. The new Yankee centerfielder and Nike N7 ambassador interacted with youth from local native communities, showing them that anything is possible, as long as you put in the hard work and dedication.

 

11-Year-Old Community Member Attends National Cheer Championships

The Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships took place December 7-14, 2013, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community member Kassandra “Kassie” Montano-Smith, 11, and her team of 15, the Superstition Pop Warner Braves, were among the approximately 300 teams who competed for the championship title.

 

Westwood Warriors Look to Hayes and Carlos for Direction

On Friday, January 10, the Westwood High School girls varsity basketball team played Gila Ridge in Mesa. Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members Mysty Hayes and TC Carlos helped the Warriors to dominate on the court, with a final score of 52-37. The Warriors were also victorious in their January 21 game against Camelback High School; that score was 49-27.

 

Phoenix Suns Stop by Round House Café

On January 16, players and staff from the NBA Phoenix Suns paid a visit to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, stopping by the Round House Café to talk about what has been going on with the team, sign autographs and offer advice to Community youth.
