Caregivers: ‘The Heart of Our Community’

0n Wednesday, November 12, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with SRPMIC Senior Services, held the annual Family Caregivers Conference at the Talking Stick Resort. The conference was held to provide caregivers with valuable resources and educational information to help benefit Community families.

Youth Services Kids Program Thanks Law Enforcement Departments

As a part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month events that took place in October, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community youth who participate in the Youth Services program wanted to thank those involved in law enforcement in the Community, including the police and fire departments and the prosecutor’s office, for all they do to ensure the safety of the Community.

 

New Law Enforcement Commission Members Sworn In

On October 13 at the Salt River Courthouse, Chief Judge Ryan Andrews administered the oath of office to four Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members joining the Law Enforcement Commission. New members Eric Schurz, Erniestina Deer, Denelle Prieto and Martha Loring join existing commission members Wi-Bwa Williams, president; Leland Johnson, vice president; and Garfield King.

 

O’odham and Piipaash storytelling, is it a cultural practice fading away?

As wintertime approaches, it is nice to remember some of the O’odham traditions that took place in the past and in some households continue today. One tradition is the preparation and enjoyment of traditional foods, like Ga’ iwsa (ground corn), a dish that was made from the roasted corn that was harvested in the fall and stored for use throughout the winter and into the coming year. Another tradition was the sharing of stories to teach and entertain each other as the winter nights became longer.
