Swim, Bike, Run: Kids’ Ironman Triathlon

Bright and early on a Saturday morning, when most kids are still fast asleep, 34 gathered at the Salt River Pool getting ready to take a plunge into the chilly waters. The swim was the first leg of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Kids Ironman Triathlon, which took place on Saturday, November 9.

 

Community Boys Play League Football

For the fall season, four boys of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community have been participating in amateur youth football leagues operated by the Pop Warner and National Youth Sports (NYS) organizations. Aimery Kuwanvana, James Schaaf, and Dominic Dallas played on the NYS Fanatics team, and Mathew Primeaux, 12, played on the Arizona Pop Warner football team Superstition Stalkers.

 

Getting Healthy to Play Youth Football

In elementary school, Jacob Schurz would see his friends wearing Mesa Youth Football League team jerseys. He would play quick games with them during recess and was inspired to play with them on a real team. This year he did just that. Now 13 years old and in the seventh grade at Stapley Junior High School, Schurz joined the Mesa Youth Football League’s Bobcats team.

 

Fifth Annual Red Mountain Half Marathon

Runners and walkers took to the streets and dirt roads as they participated in this year’s Red Mountain Half Marathon, held on October 26 at Salt River High School. The half marathon course covers a distance of 13.1 miles throughout the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Also part of the event is the youth progressive 1-mile race, for which Community youth previously completed quarter-mile legs and then came out on October 26 to complete the final quarter-mile leg.
