Community Day Festival

gallery-01The Community celebrated its 133rd birthday on June 16 by hosting the annual Community Day celebration. Dinner was served by the Round House Café and everyone had a great time eating inside or outside as they listened to music.
The event started off with the band Bad Lucy, which played their set as everyone was taking pictures. Many Community members enjoyed listening to the band. Bad Lucy was followed by the Gomez Band from the Tohono O’odham Nation, which played chicken scratch into the night as dancers moved across the dance floor.

Jr. Miss & Miss Salt River Pageant

gallery-02During the evening of June 16, Ki-Ana Reina and Anissa Marie Pacheco participated in the Jr. Miss Salt River Pageant. At the same time, the Miss Salt River Pageant was held. This year it had only one contestant, Elisa Briones.

Kinship Conference Series

gallery-01With students on summer vacation, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Health and Human Services Division held a Kinship Conference at the Lehi Community Building. The one-day conference on June 12 was part of the Educate to Elevate campaign, funded by a grant from the Methamphetamine & Suicide Prevention Initiative, and included numerous activities to keep youth in touch with their heritage as Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members and to understand their Community traditions and values. Games, hands-on activities and storytelling sessions were led by staff and Community members who volunteered their time to the conference.

Graduation Recognition Ceremony

gallery-01The Salt River Education Department held its annual Graduation Recognition Ceremony at the Talking Stick Resort and Casino on June 21. A little more than 50 Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community students, both high school graduates as well as college and university graduates, attended the recognition ceremony along with family members.
