On August 26, The Salt River High School Eagles varsity football team opened the season with a home game against Gilbert Christian, and it was a tough loss.
The Eagles fell short as the Knights scored several touchdowns during the first quarter, taking the early 20-0 lead. On a positive note, No. 71 Trevor Waters and No. 72 Jason Chiago played good defense as they tackled a Knights player.
The Knights battled on offense with every possession. On one play they completed a pass caught on the Eagles 1-yard line, scoring a touchdown to increase their lead 36-0.
The Eagles players kept their heads in the game and stayed focused on earning a chance to score, but the Knights intercepted a pass from Eagles quarterback Btaka Brown and ran it into the end zone to widen their lead.
The Eagles improved their spirits as Lloyd Lewis put together a run and was tackled at the 5-yard line. The Eagles scored on their next drive, putting themselves on the board in the second quarter.
Shortly after, the Eagles scored another touchdown, but they still trailed 38-12.
The late score was not enough as the Knights tacked on 27 additional points to win the game 65-12.
