On February 26, the gates to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick opened at 11 a.m., with anxious fans ready to watch the first spring training game held at the new facility for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.

It takes a lot of work and dedication to keep Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, or any spring training facility, in tip-top shape. Salt River Fields Head Groundskeeper Marshall Jennings literally turned off his lawn mower and sat down for a few minutes with Au-Authm Action News to discuss everything involved with the maintaining the grounds.

 

Community Members Participate in Lost Dutchman Marathon

On February 20, five Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members and employees participated in the 10th Annual Lost Dutchman Marathon. Some ran the half marathon and others ran the 10K or the 8K; the run started at Gold Canyon and ended in Apache Junction, taking runners through a scenic route starting at the Superstition Mountains near the rumored site of the legendary Lost Dutchman gold mine.

 

Flagstaff Takes 8th Grade and Under Tournament

This year the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Recreation Department changed the format of the “junior high” boys and girls basketball tournament to the “Eighth Grade and Under Tournament,” which took place February 17-19. The reason the department made the name change was because there were other students participating in the tournament who were ninth-grade junior high and ninth-grade high school students.
