On May 24, Daniel Smith, Jr. [or “Big Dan,” as he is called by his coaches], received the 2010–11 Male Student Athlete of the Year Award at Carson Junior High’s awards ceremony. Throughout the school year, Smith participated in wrestling, flag football, and cross country, and he was also recognized for his fundraising efforts for each sport. While on the school’s wrestling team, he ended the season with a first-place win in his weight division during the Mesa Junior High School Wrestling Tournament in October 2010.

After the wrestling season was over, Smith took on a new challenge in sports by joining the flag football team, which eventually took second place in their division. He ended the year participating in cross country.

“It was surprising to be named the Athlete of the Year,” said Smith when he received the award.

Smith will continue to play sports next year as a freshman at Westwood High School.

“We are very proud of him,” said his mother, Davina Dallas. “We look forward to supporting him in freshman football, baseball and wrestling at Westwood High School next year. Go Warriors!”

“I would like to thank my dad [Daniel Smith, Sr.] for helping me out with a lot of information he gave me on all the sports I played this year,” said Smith.
